What is a Solar Library?

The Solar Library is made up of individual flat packed units. Each unit unfolds to create 1,600 watts of solar charging plus all the charge controllers and hookups for a single art project. The doors are code protected to keep participants safe and to reserve charging capacity for the artist using that unit.

Six units load onto a custom trailer for transport and two trailers or 12 units represent a single branch. A Branch can serve between 6 & 12 small art projects depending on the electricity needs of those projects. Small art is defined as approximately 1,000 watts. Or a project that would have run on a single small generator.

Each branch is deployed by a small camp of Solarians. The Library will grow each year until it is serving the approximately 200 small art projects.

The Solar Library is painted with the colors of the sunrise and sunset to make them easy to locate. The units are designed as functional sculpture. They maximize charging angles while being pleasing to the eye in a way that doesn’t compete with the art on the playa. At night the lighting invokes the reflections and rays cast by a rising or setting sun.
